A few  bad eggs have given people a less than pleasant perception  about Greek life as a whole, but the truth of the matter is that these very public examples of Greek life are really only a small sample size. My goal for this post is in no way, shape, or form intended to recruit kids coming to college to join Greek life. I fully comprehend that its not for everyone, and thats fineâ€"to each their own. Instead, my aim is to teach people that going Greek is no different than joining any other student-run organization. In the rush process, there are interviews, there is an executive board that runs the chapter, there are chair positions that execute specific jobs to aid in the running of the chapter, and there is an alumni base that offers support to its undergrad counterparts. However, the real focus of Greek life is to be a supplemental part of the collegiate education system and to assist in developing young men and women into functioning members of society. I believe that becoming part of the Greek community  is something that will augment ones  college experiences in a positive manner. When I first came to Illinois, it was my first time spending more than a week away from home by myself. At that point in my life, joining a fraternity had never even crossed my mind. This was true until I started exploring campus. When I came across the fraternity I would one day be a proud member of, I was oblivious. All I saw was a kid in a t-shirt from a high school near where I lived back home. Wanting to meet a new friend, I walked up to the kid and was instantly hooked. Now, people can brush my experience off as a simple rush tactic implemented on an impressionable college freshman, but I see it as more. The immediate and genuine friendship I experienced that day and those I’ve enjoyed for the past three years have been some of my fondest memories of college. For me, Greek life has always been about camaraderie, the personal development of my brothers and myself, and helping each other as much as we can to succeed in both our personal lives as well as our academic and professional lives. To a large extent, good teaching, which is teaching that is engaging, relevant, multicultural, and appealing to a variety of modalities and learning styles, works well with all children. Both high and low expectations can create self-fulfilling prophecies. It is vital for students to believe that they can achieve before they will risk trying; young people are astute at sensing whether their teachers believe they can succeed. By the same token, teachers must truly believe their students can achieve before they will put forth their best effort to teach them. The teachers beliefs must be translated into instructional practices if students are to benefit: actions speak louder than attitudes. According to researcher Sandra Graha m of the University of Californiaâ€Å"Los Angeles, when a teacher expresses sympathy over failure, students typically infer that the teacher thinks they are incapable of succeeding, not that they simply may not have tried hard enough. Similarly, when a teacher gives students lavish praise for completing a simple task or offers help before being asked for it, students infer that the teacher thinks they are stupid. It is most important to not only differentiate instruction for individual student, but differentiate the feedback and expectations for each student. Based upon the fact that there is no more general education classrooms, each and every teacher must differentiate their instruction to best reach each student. It is no longer acceptable to only have one way of instructing a class, or assuming that each student will learn the same. Teachers must be sure to include a variety of teaching strategies, such as whole class instruction, turn and talks and guided practice. These different strategies will help to best reach each students learning needs. This process can be related to the philosophy of experiential learning. This philosophy is defined as the process of learning through experience, and is more specifically defined as learning through reflection on doing. Its origins may be traced back to Aristotle in 350 BCE, but has been more recently further developed by philosopher Peter Senge in 1990. He wrote in his book The Fifth Discipline, learning only has good effects when learners have the desire to absorb the knowledge. Irving has been notorious about putting stress in this issue that a number of book reviews coming from columnists like Doane and Hodges notices that Irving views a great strength in male power and he not only sees it as a day to day occurrence, but more importantly, that he found it as one of the things that are inevitable in the present day scenario. In the perfect words, he explained how he viewed brutalization of sex in The World According to Garp: â€Å"We are all terminal cases. Imagining something is better than remembering something. If you ask me, I think no author has ever done that simply for the reason of having people get the wrong impression of what he was trying to say. It’s a pity that very few try this tactic, coz you know if you have a great novel in your hand if your only allowed to have two of the varying reactions to reading it; you either hate it or love it. Why is this so? Because in the two varying ends of the pole, the book achieved what it’s author’s intention was to begin with; stir your emotions and strike a chord. As for Irving’s Goal in stressing a point in exposing brutalization in sex in his novel, I think he pretty much achieved it by simply stirring an outburst of public opinion in the feminist movement. Even though the general reaction to the context of his novel may initially be bad for women in the feminist movement, eventually true colors came up to float and women now realize the real point of Irving’s writing about how painful it is to be a woman. The Egyptian and Mesopotamian civilizations are similar yet differ in the way in which they were created. Civilizations were created years and years ago with many mythological characters and beliefs. Religion, gender, culture, gods, and society are impact the creation of these civilizations. In each of these civilizations, â€Å"we† come from the same place, the Water. In the Egyptian creation story, the first thing that existed was the ocean. The ocean then laid an egg that hatched, Ra, the sun. Once Ra the sun was born, then came gods and goddesses, atmosphere, the Earth, and so on. In the Mesopotamian creation story, everything began with the water. From the water, sea monsters and gods were born. The gods then began to create life. The water played a huge role on the creation of â€Å"us† and who â€Å"we† are. Both the Egyptian and Mesopotamian civilizations believe in Polytheism. The Egyptian creation story takes place with many different gods and goddesses. Ra, the sun, brought these gods forth. The gods were Shu and Geb while the goddesses were Tefnut and Nut. Each of these gods was then the creator of something. In Mesopotamian society gods were brought to the picture, which then were the creators of everything. Gender played a picture in each of these creation stories. The stories differ on the roles of Gender. In Egypt, they had respect for women and were treated identical to men. For example, Shu, a god, and Tefnut, a goddess together created the atmosphere. The Mesopotamian’s take on gender was that male and female were not equal. For example, Tiamat, the female creator, tries to take control. Her descendants unite against her, choosing one of their number – Marduk, the god of Babylon – to lead them. In conclusion, the Egyptian and Mesopotamian civilizations are very similar. This leads me to believe that all civilizations are related when it dates back to the year in which they were created. These creation stories only differed in one major category, which were gender roles. Overall, the relationship between Egyptian and Mesopotamian creation stories were very similar.
